Setup Essentials After Buying Your New Laptop

Buying a laptop can be a big purchase. These machines are in demand for school, work, or just for personal use such as social media, online shopping, gaming, and streaming video. Before you buy a laptop, it’s a good idea to do a lot of research into what’s available, make a list of your needs and nice-to-haves, set a budget, and eventually start shopping around to narrow down your options to those that fit these requirements before making your final choice. Once you have your laptop in your hands after unboxing it, however, what are some things that you should do before you go ahead and start using it?

Physical Protection

It is a good idea to add some kind of physical protection to your laptops. While there are durable laptops out there, they cannot withstand everything. Most laptops are designed to be lightweight and portable; however, on the downside this makes them fairly easy to accidentally damage. Before you start using your laptop, it’s a good idea to invest in a case, screen protector, and other protective accessories like Lenovo Laptop Coolers to prevent it from overheating.

Anti-Virus

Of course, once you have unboxed your new laptop, charged it up and turned it on you probably can’t wait to get all your favorite apps and games installed. However, first things first – make sure that your new device has adequate protection from malware and hackers. You can do this by installing and running a good anti-virus program. You can find free options, but for the best protection it’s always best to get a paid subscription. Check your purchase as many manufacturers and retailers offer a few months or even a year’s free antivirus subscription when you buy.

Security

Another thing to consider when setting up your new laptop is keeping it secure. Ideally, you should set up a password to access your laptop at the very least. This might be the only option that is available for security depending on the make and model, so go for a strong password that is not easy to guess. Some modern laptops offer biometric security such as fingerprint or face unlock – if this is available, it’s definitely worth using for that extra layer of protection.

Tracking

Finally, set up tracking if your laptop allows you to do so. For example, if you have a new MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, you can use the Find My system to see where your laptop is if it’s turned on and connected to Wi-Fi, or where it was when it was last switched on and connected. If your laptop is stolen, this can be very useful for helping you find it. And even if you don’t end up recovering it, setting up Find My will give you the option to reset your laptop remotely so that the thieves don’t get their hands on your data.

Buying a new laptop is always exciting. But before you get straight into using it, don’t forget these setup essentials.
