Overview:
Triund trek and Laka which will move you away from the hustle and bustle of modern life is situated at Dhauladhar ranges at around 10,000 feet above sea level. Triund is over 9 km from Mcleodganj and the trek takes 5 days to complete. You get to explore its local market, Bhagsu waterfalls which is just 2 km from Mcleodganj which will completely mesmerize your journey.
You also see the beautiful Kangra valley on one side and Dhauladhar ranges on the other side which makes it the most sought-after trekking in India. The journey is filled with deodar, rhododendron, and oak forests. The trek is not challenging but the last few kilometers will take you to the curves and shapes which will, although more, become thrilling for you.
To take on this long adventure you need to first reach the base camp of Mcleodganj which is just 8 kms from Dharamshala. The trek will take you to the spectacular views of Bhagsu waterfalls and Laka glacier and Gallu Devi temple.
The first part of the journey covers 7 kms from Mcleodganj to Bhagsu village and then the last 3 kms covers from Bhagsu village to Triund. You pass through 22 curves in particular which stands as a laborious stumbling block. You then can go to Laka glacier from here and can follow Indrahar pass trek to Chamba from it. Indrahar pass is set 1400 meters above Triund and it is best for experienced and professional trekkers. The meticulous hike will take you to the popular Lahesh caves. Lahesh caves stand as a great spot for camping under the rock caves and surrounding yourself with magnificent mountains.
Laka glacier trek can be enjoyed during April and May where the snow melts down and the weather is quite pleasant. While beyond August you will see the entire region covered with unending layers of snow.
Itinerary:
Day 01- Arrive Dharamshala
To start your trek you first need to arrive at the starting point that is Dharamshala by taking an overnight bus. You can visit Dharamshala by exploring some places like Norbulingka which is a Tibetan centre for learning and preserving traditional art and crafts. You can also visit the Dalai Lama temple to seek spiritual longingness.
Day 02- Trek from BhagsuNag to Triund
You then start your trek from Bhagsu nag in the morning and you come across deodar, oak and rhododendron trees of Triund. It will take over 4 hrs to reach the top where you will see the superb view of Dhauladhar mountains where on one side Kangra valley and on the other side plethora of mountains. At night you enjoy bonfire and stargazing by camping.
Day 03- Triund to Laka Glacier trek
You wake up watching a beautiful sunrise in the midst of mountains. You then start your trek to Laka where you pass through glacial mountains. It is full of snow from March to June. Spend some time at Laka glacier to soak in its beauty. Later then you walk back to Triund and stay overnight there.
Day 04- Triund to Bhagsu Nag walk
After having breakfast you walk back towards BhagsuNag through Laheta village which will take 4 hrs. Have lunch at Bhagsu Nag and here you are at the end of the journey with lots of beautiful memories with you.
Best time to visit:
Triund trek can be done throughout the year. While the ideal to go for it would be between March and June to get away from the sweltering heat. While in winters especially during September and mid December the trek is a treat as you encounter chilly weather. However during monsoon the trek becomes a challenge for you as when you pass through lush green forests paths become muddy due to rains. Furthermore the route upto the top is closed during January and February due to continuous snowfall.
Difficulty:
Triund and Laka trek is comparatively easier and not much exhausting. However you should be careful when passing through the dense forests as the paths are unnerving one. And during winters be careful while climbing to the top as the presence of the snow may make it difficult for you.
