Retro vs Modern: How Have Arcade Consoles Evolved

The concept of gaming has evolved a lot over the years, from different consoles, to high tech graphics and music. Some of the old, more classic games are almost unrecognisable. However, nothing can beat the feeling of nostalgia you get from playing a retro arcade console, a feeling that you just do not get when playing the latest Xbox game.

This article will outline the difference in how the world of gaming has evolved, and why the older generation prefer the feel of an old school arcade console as opposed to the latest craze.

Preloved

In today's generation a lot of people are obsessed with having the best of the best. This causes havok when companies such as Xbox or Playstation release the newest game console as these people decide they can not live without it. There have been known cases where people have fought for the last console on the shelf and people buying more consoles than they need to charge over double what they paid in hope of making a large profit.

As well as this people sign up for restock notifications and wait months, and still end up missing their chance.

This is the sort of drama that the retro gaming world manages to avoid. People sell their secondhand, retro arcade consoles at prices that they know they are worth, and considering limited number available these prices are for the most part, pretty reasonable.

If you were to search the internet you probably would not have an issue with finding the retro arcade console you were looking for secondhand. If there isn't one that takes your fancy, there are companies that can make you a bespoke arcade console that combines everything you love from your favorite retro game with the design that is chosen by you.

Originality

Older, original games are more about the narrative of the game itself as opposed to the graphic element of how the game is visually. This is something that has almost been flipped in the creation of newer games. Games nowadays lack an original narrative, the storylines and aims of the game have many similarities to those of the older games. This is because most ideas have already been used.

The way in which new games evolve is through their graphics, which is something that was not  a concern when it came to older games. The graphic element of these games appear to me more thought out than the actual narrative of the game itself, which can lead to feelings of being underwhelmed, and cause interest to be lost sooner.

Family Friendly

Games featured on older arcade consoles are games that bring families together. Games like Donkey Kong and Mario Kart offer no major violence that would make them less appropriate for younger ages. However, this does not make them any less enjoyable for older generations either.

It is these types of games that are ideal for family game nights and get-togethers as these games can be loved by anyone of any age.

The fact that older games also do not offer the option for playing online means that you are forced to sit within the same room to play the game in multiplayer. This is a much more social way of playing video games with someone.

Plug In and Play

A more frustrating feature that comes with playing newer game consoles is the fact that you can not just rely on plugging the game in and being able to play it instantly. Newer consoles need to be kept up to date, and this means constant system updates. Not only do the consoles themselves require regular updates, the games do as well. Imagine switching on your Xbox to a twenty minute system update, and then starting up your favorite game to be greeted with yet another update.

As well as the constant need for updates, most newer consoles face limitations without internet connection, which means if for whatever reason your internet is down, you're pretty limited to what features of the game will work.

Old arcade consoles do not have this issue. You can simply plug it in and play it. This is due to the simplicity of the console itself as well as the games.

Nostalgia

The classic games that older generations used to play never get old. They are irreplaceable and bring back happy memories and nostalgia for many people. Due to the fact old arcade consoles had very limited games available they never got old. And for most people they probably never will.

Today there are so many new releases it's hard to keep up, and even if people do get hooked on a new game, people always go back to the classics. This is because new games, and constant new releases, do not allow for the nostalgia that a lot of the older generation want from their gaming.

To Summarise

There are many reasons as to why we keep going back to the retro side of the gaming world. The idea of actually playing the game in the presence of someone else brings a social element that you just do not get with online gaming features. The lack of detail which old gaming graphics provide makes these games ideal for the whole family.

When playing newly released games the similarities of the narrative just do not give you the same sense of nostalgia as plugging in a classic console. Which is the main reason why no matter what new gaming releases come out, people will always go back to the classics.
